With social and economic issues surrounding the Pacific countries, the 2018 Commonwealth Games are being used to promote and encourage sport, as well as raise public awareness on obesity.
Celebrity athletes, such as Ryan Pini from Papua New Guinea, are leading the movement to support a healthy and active lifestyle. As concerning reports reveal that the “top ten fattest countries in the world are all in the Pacific”, the prevalence of non-communicable diseases in these areas is being tackled through community engagement and inspiring role-models.
Athletes competing, local health associations and the World Health Organisation are all teaming up to highlight the values associated with support, such as integrity, discipline, honesty and team work, which they hope to translate into the lives of Pacific Islanders to improve health outcomes.
