Gold Cards for Aboriginal people exposed to British nuclear testing

Following decades of campaigning, the 2017 Federal budget will provide improved health care to Aboriginal people who were exposed to extreme levels of radiation.

British nuclear tests were carried out in far north South Australia as well as near the Monte Bello Islands in Western Australia during the 1950s and 60s. Though many were relocated from these sites before the testing, some people remained and have consequently suffered serious injury and disability.

The compensation will come in the form of veterans’ Gold Cards, which cover most health costs.
