The NDIS roll-out to south-western Victoria is planned for October 3rd this year, promising equitable access to services for all people living with a disability. It is hoped that the scheme will offer people more choice in terms of who provides their support.
In preparation, information sessions are being held this week in Warrnambool and Portland.
However, trends in areas where it is already available are giving rise to concerns about how carers will be supported.
- Access to carer respite services is not automatically granted;
- Hours spent taking care of family members with a disability have not been reduced for 50% of carers studied; and
- 40% of service providers stated they could not meet the rising demand stimulated by the NDIS.
