Motherhood: appearance vs. Reality

The glamorisation of motherhood in today’s society, combined with the stigmatisation of hardships of motherhood has lead to illusions of what is actually one of, if not the most challenging event in a woman’s life.

One in seven women face postnatal depression. Issues like weight gain, hair loss, stretch marks, incontinence and bladder weakness are common, yet rarely discussed. Moreover, women are pressured by the media to ‘bounce back’ to their pre-pregnancy self and body, leading to body image issues, anxiety and stress.

Women should be empowered with evidence-based facts about childbearing and its possible effects on their body, career and life in order for them make a rational decision if the battle is worth it.
