Deaths and physical restraint in aged care facilities

A Monash University research team has been looking into the use of physical restraint in Australian nursing homes and resulting deaths.

4 of the 5 reported deaths due to physical restraint involved elderly dementia patients. The study’s authors stress seeking solutions, as the number of dementia patients is predicted to increase.

While the first set of Dementia Care Guidelines were published in March 2016, there are still “no bodies governing the use of physical restraints in aged care facilities” or the use of anti-psychotic drugs for that matter.
