Government considers removing Medicare rebate freeze

The Federal Health Minister, Greg Hunt, has indicated that the government is reviewing the Medicare rebate freeze before the next budget, under pressure from various health organisations.

In the 2016 May Budget, the Federal Government under Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull extended a Medicare rebate freeze, which determined that for doctors who bulk-bill, the amount of funding they receive from Medicare will remain the same in 2020 as it was in 2014, despite rising costs in providing that medical service.
