Disappointing Closing the Gap Report

The Closing the Gap Report, released on 14/2, reported mixed results in the seven targets areas, with life expectancy and child mortality targets not being met.

The Closing the Gap strategy is a promise to achieve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health equality within 25 years by all levels of Australian government. The recent report found positives in findings such as decreasing deaths from circulatory diseases among Indigenous Australians, yet there was an overall sense of disappointment with the progress achieved by the government, demonstrated most clearly by the widening mortality gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations.
